Starlink and other satellite internet providers will have to meet four regulatory conditions before launching services in Pakistan, PTA Chairman told a Senate committee on Monday.

Briefing the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom, the PTA chairman said four to five satellite internet companies have shown interest in entering the Pakistani market.

He said the companies must first secure approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). They will then need a license from the Pakistan Space Regulatory Board and clearance from the Ministry of Interior.

After completing these requirements, the companies can approach the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for the next stage of licensing.

The PTA chairman said no satellite internet application is currently pending with the authority because the Pakistan Space Regulatory Board is still developing the required regulatory framework.

He explained that satellite internet providers cannot receive licenses until the framework is finalized and approved.

The committee also discussed the prolonged delay in Starlink’s entry into Pakistan. The PTA chairman said Starlink had first approached the authority for a license in February 2022.

He added that the growing interest from satellite internet companies could bring additional options for internet connectivity in Pakistan once the regulatory process is completed.
