The Sindh government has assigned four major development projects worth Rs. 8.5 billion in Karachi to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), with work on three schemes expected to begin from August.
The projects are part of the provincial government’s plan to improve traffic management, upgrade major roads, and provide better connectivity across key areas of the city.
A major component of the package is the construction of a flyover interchange near Northern Bypass on the M-9 Motorway, which will provide an alternative route for thousands of commuters and reduce delays caused by existing U-turns.
The Sindh Local Government Department has initiated the process of securing approval from the National Highway Authority (NHA) as the structure will be built over the motorway.
The interchange will improve movement between Jinnah Avenue, Malir Cantt Road, Hyderabad-bound traffic, and Sohrab Goth Sabzi Mandi, allowing motorists to avoid lengthy diversions.
The estimated cost of this project stands at around Rs. 2.3 billion, including rehabilitation and beautification work along Jinnah Avenue.
Another key project approved under the package is a flyover at the Al-Asif Square intersection, connecting Abul Hasan Isphahani Road with the motorway. The scheme carries an estimated cost of Rs. 2.1 billion and is scheduled to enter the construction phase in August.
Officials expect the flyover to improve traffic flow coming from multiple directions and reduce congestion at one of Karachi’s busiest junctions.
The provincial government has also approved the rehabilitation and improvement of Hawksbay Road, covering the stretch from Y Junction to Machli Chowk and extending towards Kakapir Road.
The road project spans approximately 8.5 kilometres and has been allocated around Rs. 4.16 billion. Construction work on the scheme is also expected to commence in August.
Additionally, development work on the Malir Halt Underpass is likely to begin soon as part of the wider Karachi infrastructure improvement initiative.
The projects are aimed at addressing long-standing traffic bottlenecks and enhancing connectivity across Karachi’s major transport corridors.
