The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a fresh warning to parents over the risks children can face while using smartphones, tablets and other internet-connected devices.
The authority has asked parents to keep a close watch on their children’s digital activities and set reasonable limits on daily screen time. It said children should have enough time for studies, recreation, sleep and family activities instead of spending excessive time on devices.
The PTA has also recommended that children use phones, laptops and tablets in areas where parents can supervise them. Keeping devices in common areas of the home can help parents stay aware of what their children are accessing online.
Parents should also become familiar with the social media platforms and digital services their children use, according to the authority. This would allow them to guide children about responsible internet use and help them recognize potential online risks.
The PTA has further advised parents to activate parental controls and content filtering tools. Age appropriate settings can be used to restrict access to unsuitable content, dangerous websites and other material that may pose risks to children.
The warning comes as Pakistan continues to debate how children should be protected online, particularly on social media platforms.
In its response to the Islamabad High Court on October 1, the PTA said its existing legal powers do not allow it to make age verification mandatory or block social media access for children under 16.
The authority had issued similar advice on July 30, when it asked parents to monitor their children’s social media activities and use parental controls and age appropriate filters.
The PTA said parental involvement and greater digital awareness remain important for protecting children online while allowing them to use the internet for education, entertainment and other useful activities.
