The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collected over Rs. 476 billion in taxes through electricity bills during fiscal year 2025-26, officials informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance on Wednesday.

FBR officials told the committee that the collection included Rs. 351 billion in sales tax and Rs. 124 billion in income tax recovered from electricity consumers across residential, commercial, and industrial categories.

Tax collection through electricity bills has remained a significant revenue source for the government, with FBR collecting Rs. 562 billion in FY25, Rs. 515 billion in FY24, and Rs. 313 billion in FY23 through the same mechanism.

During FY26, industrial consumers contributed the largest share of withholding income tax among major categories, paying Rs. 66 billion, while commercial consumers paid Rs. 52 billion.

The committee was informed that non-filer households contributed Rs. 4.82 billion in income tax, while an additional Rs. 1.37 billion was collected from residential consumers under Section 235A of the Income Tax Ordinance.

From the total sales tax collection of Rs. 351 billion, around Rs. 269 billion came through standard sales tax. Additional tax collections amounted to Rs. 55 billion, while further tax contributed another Rs. 55 billion.

FBR also recovered approximately Rs. 16.5 billion from retailers through electricity bills during the fiscal year.
