Pakistan’s used vehicle imports have risen sharply following changes in import regulations, increasing from 48 vehicles in May 2026 to 2,276 in September, according to government sources.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reviewed the increase in used vehicle imports at a meeting on Wednesday, with officials presenting the latest data on vehicles entering the country through commercial and gift schemes.
The government is now considering measures for used vehicle imports as part of the new Auto Policy.
Officials also discussed the impact of the growing number of imported used vehicles on local car manufacturers. Domestic automakers have raised concerns that higher imports could reduce demand for locally assembled vehicles.
Vehicle importers have taken a different position, arguing that greater imports would increase competition and give consumers more choices in the market.
The government is expected to consider the concerns of both local manufacturers and importers while finalizing the used vehicle provisions of the new Auto Policy.
