The National Assembly on Tuesday approved the Finance Bill 2026-27 with several government-backed amendments, formally clearing the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year after the ruling coalition secured enough support to pass the legislation.

The bill was presented by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb during a session that witnessed protests from opposition members. While amendments proposed by the government were adopted by the House, all changes suggested by the opposition were rejected.

Following the bill’s approval, the National Assembly adjourned its sitting until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

The federal government had unveiled the Rs. 18.77 trillion budget earlier this month, introducing tax relief for salaried individuals and incentives for exporters, as well as the real estate and construction sectors. The budget aims to stimulate investment, support industrial growth, and achieve an economic growth rate of 4 percent during the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Despite an estimated revenue shortfall of nearly Rs. 1 trillion in the outgoing fiscal year, the government has set an ambitious tax collection target of Rs. 15.264 trillion for FY2026-27.

The target represents a 17.6 percent increase over the revised revenue estimate of Rs. 12.983 trillion for the current fiscal year and is expected to play a key role in meeting the government’s fiscal and economic objectives.
