Renowned Pakistani singer and musician Tariq Tafu has passed away at the age of 58 after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest in Lahore.
He died on Monday, June 22, after reportedly experiencing severe stomach pain. His family said his condition worsened quickly, prompting his transfer to a private hospital, where he suffered a cardiac arrest during treatment. Despite medical efforts, he could not be revived.
Tafu was widely known for his 2004 hit “Lahore Lahore Aye”, a popular cultural song that became strongly associated with Lahore’s identity and remains one of Pakistan’s most recognizable musical anthems.
He is survived by his wife, one son, and two daughters.
Born into a highly respected musical lineage, he was the son of legendary tabla maestro and composer Ustad Tafu Khan. His brother, Ustad Wajid Tafu, is also a noted figure in classical music.
Through family ties, he was connected to several prominent artists, including ghazal legend Ustad Ghulam Ali and singer Shabnam Majeed.
In recognition of his contributions to music and culture, Tariq Tafu was awarded the Pride of Pakistan shield in 2025.
