The Sapphire Soda Ash Production Project has achieved a major breakthrough after the allocation of 2.7 cusecs of water from the Mohajir Canal in Khushab, a move that significantly advances the project’s implementation phase.
The decision, facilitated through the Special Investment Facilitation Council, resolves a critical input requirement and improves the project’s operational viability.
Soda ash is an essential industrial raw material used in the production of glass, detergents, textiles, and various chemical products. Officials say increased local production will help reduce import dependency, stabilize supply chains, and strengthen Pakistan’s industrial base.
Boost for Industrial Capacity
The Sapphire project is expected to support domestic manufacturing growth by expanding production capacity in a sector that has long relied on imported raw materials. It is also anticipated to generate employment opportunities and contribute to broader industrial development.
Import Substitution Push
By increasing local output of soda ash, the project is aligned with import substitution goals, aiming to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves while improving self-reliance in key industrial inputs.
