The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has made Google’s artificial intelligence training mandatory for its employees, in a major step toward building AI skills within the public sector.

Under the initiative, Google will provide free AI training to staff across all departments of the ministry. The program aims to equip government officials with practical understanding of artificial intelligence tools and their use in administration, operations, and policymaking.

The initiative is part of the broader Digital Pakistan vision, which focuses on strengthening digital capacity in public institutions and preparing the workforce for rapid technological change. Officials say the training is expected to improve efficiency, boost productivity, and encourage a more technology-driven governance model.

According to ministry sources, the program focuses on capacity building and hands-on exposure to modern AI applications that are increasingly shaping workplaces worldwide. It is also intended to accelerate digital transformation and enhance public service delivery through emerging technologies.

The decision followed a meeting between a Google delegation and Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, where both sides agreed to deepen cooperation on AI education and digital skills development, particularly in strengthening Pakistan’s tech workforce.

Officials say the move reflects a global shift where governments are investing in AI literacy as artificial intelligence becomes central to economic competitiveness, innovation, and productivity. By making the training mandatory, the ministry aims to ensure its workforce is prepared for the next wave of digital transformation.
