Google’s AI chatbot Gemini has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the fastest-growing product in the company’s history.

CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on August 11, making Gemini the 14th Google product to cross the one-billion-user mark.

The achievement places Gemini alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion global monthly active app users in May, according to Sensor Tower data cited by Reuters.

Gemini’s Rapid Growth

Gemini has expanded at an extraordinary pace over the past year. The app had more than 400 million monthly active users at Google I/O in May 2025, exceeded 750 million by the end of 2025, crossed 900 million in May 2026, topped 950 million in July, and has now surpassed the one-billion milestone.

Google has accelerated adoption by deeply integrating Gemini across Android and its broader ecosystem while introducing new AI models and features, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, designed for coding and autonomous agent capabilities.

The one-billion figure applies only to the standalone Gemini app and excludes users accessing Google’s AI through other services. Google’s AI Mode in Search separately crossed one billion monthly users earlier this year.

Voice, Images, and AI Assistants Drive Usage

Google also shared fresh insights into user behavior.

Around 63 percent of Gemini users now interact with the AI through voice, while one in five Gemini Live sessions includes screen sharing or live camera input for real-time assistance.

The company said Gemini now generates more than 150 million images every day, and 38 percent of prompts submitted by students include file attachments. Gemini can also automate tasks across more than 40 Android applications.

Google added that the app has gained significant traction on Apple’s iOS platform, with more than 100 million active users. Mac users also submit prompts at roughly twice the rate of users on other platforms.
