The Gilgit-Baltistan government has revised the royalty fee rates for permits issued to national and international mountaineering and trekking expeditions. This includes a notable increase in the permit fees for climbing K2. The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan has introduced new trekking fees for Pakistani nationals, effective under the Finance Act, 2024.

The revised fees aim to regulate mountaineering and trekking activities in the region, ensuring sustainable tourism and environmental conservation. The trekking fee for Pakistani Nationals is Rs. 10,000 in summer, Rs. 5,000 in autumn, and Rs. 2,500 in winter.

According to a notification issued by the G-B Tourism, Sports, Culture, Archaeology & Museum Department, the permit fee for foreign climbers to scale the 8,611 meters K2 had been set at $12,000 for the group.

According to the notification, the fee for foreign individuals to scale K2 would be $5,000 during the peak summer season (Apr-Sept). The fee for the autumn season (Oct-Nov) would be $2,500, while it would be further slashed to $1,500 for the winter season (Dec-Mar).

For the iconic K-2 peak, the summer fee is set at Rs. 100,000 per person, Rs. 50,000 in autumn and Rs. 30,000 in winter for Pakistani nationals. Other peaks, such as those ranging from 8001 to 8500 meters, have fees of Rs. 50,000 in summer, Rs. 25,000 in autumn, and Rs. 15,000 in winter.

These changes reflect the government’s commitment to promoting tourism while maintaining the ecological balance of the region. All fees collected will be deposited in the GB Adventure Tourism Account, supporting conservation efforts and infrastructure development.
