In a significant move to streamline government operations, the Federal Cabinet has approved the elimination of approximately 150,000 vacant government positions.
This decision, based on recommendations from the Rightsizing Committee, aims to enhance efficiency and reduce costs within the public sector.
The Cabinet has also given the green light to outsource non-core services, such as cleaning and maintenance, which will lead to a phased reduction of posts in grades 1 to 16.
In addition to these measures, the Cabinet has imposed a total ban on the recruitment of contingency staff. The Ministry of Finance has been authorized to monitor the cash balances of other federal ministries, ensuring better financial oversight and management.
Structural changes were also approved, including the merger of the Ministry of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan with the Ministry of States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON). Furthermore, the Cabinet has sanctioned the complete shutdown of 28 institutions across five ministries, reflecting a strategic consolidation of government functions.
These decisions, derived from a summary presented by the Finance Division, underscore the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and administrative efficiency.
