The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood has suspended a BS-18 customs official, Jawad-ul-Hassan, for attempting to exert extraneous influence to secure a “choice posting.” The suspension, effective immediately, will last for 120 days.
According to a notification issued by the FBR on Monday, the suspension was enacted under Rule 5(1) of the Civil Servants (Efficiency & Discipline) Rules, 2020. Jawad-ul-Hassan, who was serving as Deputy Collector at the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement in Dera Ismail Khan, was found in violation of a directive issued by the FBR Chairman and Secretary Revenue Division on August 20, 2024, which addressed the issue of influence for preferential postings.
In a related move, the FBR has transferred a Customs Intelligence officer from the “Admin Pool” to the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence in Islamabad.
The FBR, with the Chairman’s approval, had previously circulated a letter to all departments, highlighting the detrimental impact of officers and officials exerting pressure for “choice postings,” particularly those seeking field assignments. The Chairman said that this practice undermines the integrity of the organization and sets a poor example for junior officers.
The use of extraneous influence is considered “misconduct” under the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1964, and the Civil Servants (E&D) Rules, 2020. The FBR is taking a firm stance against such practices to maintain the integrity and professionalism of the organization.
