Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, has issued a stern warning to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), stating that the regulator could face contempt charges for reinstating the ban on the social media platform X in Pakistan.

During a hearing on a revision appeal filed by PTA lawyers, the Chief Justice expressed strong displeasure over the platform’s continued restriction. The PTA had sought a revision of a previous court order, citing a recent notification from the Ministry of Interior. However, the court criticized the PTA’s change in stance, questioning whether it was a case of professional misconduct or misrepresentation.

Justice Siddiqui directly questioned the PTA team about who had instructed them to alter their position. When no clear answer was provided, the court indicated that contempt of court charges could be forthcoming. The Deputy Attorney General attempted to justify the situation, attributing it to case-related pressure, but the Chief Justice dismissed this explanation, asserting that the issue was not a result of human error.

Other PTA lawyers distanced themselves from the revised statement, and the bench noted that the PTA could have chosen to remain silent rather than present a conflicting stance. The court also inquired whether the PTA was seeking a revision of the previous order, but it was made clear that the court would not withdraw or modify its existing decision.

The next hearing in this case has been scheduled for September 24.
