The federal government has decided to shut down the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) as part of its strategy to withdraw from non-essential business operations.

This decision was confirmed by the Secretary of Industries and Production during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production on Friday.

In response to an inquiry from Senator Saifullah Niazi regarding the future of the Utility Stores, the Secretary outlined the government’s plan. Efforts are currently underway to reassign USC employees to other institutions, ensuring a smooth transition for the workforce.

Sources told Raised By Numbers that thousands of employees of USC are planning to protest against the decision at D-Chowk Islamabad.

The Secretary further explained that the subsidies provided to utility stores by the government disrupt market competition, which is a significant factor in the decision to close the stores. By stepping back from direct retail involvement, the government aims to promote a more competitive market environment.
