The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue has questioned the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor for allowing a junior official to respond to a letter addressed directly to him.
The issue came up during a committee meeting chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla. Members expressed displeasure after receiving a reply from Deputy Director Salman Shah instead of the Governor or another senior SBP official.
The letter concerned foreign exchange facilities for parliamentarians. However, the committee was dissatisfied with the level of the official who responded on the central bank’s behalf.
Members said the matter required a response from the Governor or senior management rather than a junior officer. They also sought an explanation from the SBP over why the letter was handled this way.
The committee found the response unacceptable and called for the central bank’s senior management to clarify the matter.
