A National Assembly member has expressed frustration over the lack of mobile service at his ancestral home, saying he has been left “silent out of shame” after repeatedly highlighting the issue.
Speaking during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication, Dr. Zulfiqar Bhatti said mobile service is still unavailable at his ancestral home.
“Mobile service is not available in my ancestral home. I have become silent out of shame after saying so,” he said.
The remarks came as the committee discussed the poor quality and availability of mobile and internet services across Pakistan.
Committee members raised concerns that users in many parts of the country struggle with call connectivity and service quality. Members said calls often need to be made multiple times before connecting, while some areas continue to have little or no mobile coverage.
The committee members said mobile services remain substandard across a large part of the country and questioned telecom operators over the situation.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) acknowledged that mobile and internet service quality remains a problem in different areas.
The committee has summoned representatives of Jazz, Zong and Ufone to its next meeting to explain the poor quality and coverage of their services.
It also directed the PTA to take steps to improve mobile service quality and provide details of fines imposed on telecom companies, along with the amounts recovered.
