Karachi’s long delayed K IV water supply project requires an additional Rs. 70 billion for completion, despite Rs. 86 billion already being spent on the scheme, the federal government informed lawmakers on Wednesday.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Water Resources reviewed the progress of the project and was told that only around 40 percent of the work has been completed so far.
Minister for Water Resources Moeen Wattoo said the federal government is working on the project, while water distribution remains the responsibility of the Sindh government.
The committee took up a calling attention notice submitted by MNA Aminul Haque regarding continued delays in the K IV project.
WAPDA Chairman Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Sajjad Ghani informed the committee that funding constraints had previously slowed progress. However, he added that the Sindh government has now released its share of Rs. 7.70 billion for the project.
During the meeting, MNA Syed Waseem Hussain highlighted Karachi’s worsening water shortage, saying residents are still dependent on private water tankers due to inadequate supply.
He said the tanker mafia continues to operate in the city, with some households paying as much as Rs. 8,000 for a single tanker of water.
The K IV project is among Karachi’s largest water supply initiatives and is aimed at increasing water availability for the city’s expanding population after completion.
