Pakistan’s rooftop solar expansion continued at a rapid pace in May 2026, with net-metered electricity accounting for a record-high share of the country’s power generation, reflecting the growing shift toward self-generated energy.

Latest data compiled by Arif Habib Limited from NEPRA shows net-metered electricity represented 4.1 percent of total electricity generation in May, an increase of 105 basis points compared with the same month last year.

Although electricity supplied through net metering declined 9.5 percent from April, it remained among the highest monthly levels recorded, underscoring sustained growth in solar installations across the country.

The report also noted that Pakistan’s overall power generation slipped 0.9 percent year-on-year in May. Despite the slight decline, NEPRA projects around 1 percent growth in electricity demand during calendar year 2026.

The rising contribution of net metering highlights the increasing number of households and businesses investing in rooftop solar systems, reducing their dependence on grid electricity as they seek lower energy costs.
