An opposition member of the National Assembly proposed that IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja should have the first telecom tower installed at her residence as part of the implementation of a controversial telecom infrastructure bill.

The comment was made during a parliamentary session where lawmakers were discussing legislation allowing telecom operators to install towers on private property. The proposed framework reportedly includes strict penalties—up to Rs5 crore—for individuals who refuse to allow tower installation on their premises.

While speaking on the floor of the House, the opposition lawmaker criticized the idea and said that if such a law is enforced, it should begin symbolically from the IT minister’s own home. The remark triggered laughter and reactions from members present in the assembly.

The bill has already been approved by the National Assembly and is now awaiting review in the Senate. It has drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers, who argue that it raises concerns over private property rights and could be seen as regulatory overreach.
