A Karachi resident was abducted near the city’s airport and forced to transfer $8,600 from his digital account in a robbery that has raised fresh concerns over crimes involving digital assets.

According to the victim’s father, his son left home on Wednesday night to travel to Lahore. During the journey, the online taxi driver stopped at a petrol pump, where four armed men travelling in a double-cabin vehicle intercepted them and forced the victim into their car at gunpoint.

The father said the suspects drove his son around for more than an hour and transferred $8,600 from his digital account during the ordeal.

He said the assailants also snatched the victim’s mobile phone, laptop and other belongings before subjecting him to violence and dumping him in Karachi’s Korangi area.

The suspects then fled the scene.

The victim’s father alleged that the Airport police station had so far not even received his complaint.
