The federal government has announced the abolition of free electricity units previously granted to employees of the power sector, with Energy Minister Awais Leghari calling the move an unprecedented reform aimed at ending preferential benefits within the energy system.

In a statement shared on X, the minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan had, for the first time in its history, withdrawn the free electricity facility provided to power sector officials. He said the decision followed acceptance of the Power Division’s petition by the court, clearing the way for implementation of the policy.

Leghari described the elimination of free units as a long-standing public demand, noting that citizens had repeatedly questioned why officials continued receiving subsidized electricity while consumers struggled with rising power tariffs. He said the government viewed the decision as an important step toward fairness, accountability, and financial discipline in the energy sector.

The minister added that the government would continue pursuing reforms designed to strengthen the country’s economic stability and serve the broader national interest. He expressed hope that measures targeting structural inefficiencies and privileged concessions would contribute to improving public confidence in the power sector and easing pressure on electricity consumers.
