A new investigation by The New York Times has reignited global debate over the true identity of Bitcoin’s elusive creator, claiming that British cryptographer Adam Back may be the person behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

The report argues that technical evidence, historical timelines, and early communications surrounding the launch of Bitcoin strongly link Back to the development of the digital currency introduced in 2009.

Key Evidence Highlighted

According to the investigation, Back’s creation of Hashcash — an early proof-of-work system designed to combat email spam — closely resembles the mechanism later used to secure Bitcoin’s blockchain. The report also notes that Back was among the earliest known contacts of Nakamoto during Bitcoin’s formative period, fueling long-running speculation within cryptography circles.

Back Rejects the Claim

Despite the renewed attention, Adam Back has denied being Bitcoin’s anonymous founder. He has previously dismissed similar theories, stating that while he contributed ideas influential to digital currency research, he was not responsible for creating Bitcoin.

Mystery Still Unresolved

The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has remained one of technology’s greatest unsolved mysteries for more than a decade. Numerous individuals have been suggested as possible candidates, but none have been definitively proven to be the creator.

The question carries major financial significance: Nakamoto is believed to control early Bitcoin holdings estimated at roughly one million coins, potentially worth tens of billions of dollars.
