The Sindh government faces the potential loss of wheat worth Rs. 150 billion as over 1.37 million metric tons of the staple food remains stuck in warehouses. The provincial government has yet to authorize the release of the stock, raising concerns over its prolonged storage.
The Sindh Food Department has formally written to Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, urging the immediate release of wheat stocks from the 2022-23 and 2024 harvests. The department warned that extended storage could result in significant damage to the wheat, further exacerbating the financial loss.
Farmers have also called on the provincial government to sell the stored wheat without delay. They cautioned that holding onto old stock will disrupt the market for upcoming harvests, potentially lowering prices and impacting their earnings.
