Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to issue visas within 24 hours to foreign businessmen seeking partnerships with Pakistani IT companies. The move, based on recommendations from the Pakistan Software Export Board, aims to attract global investors to Pakistan’s IT sector and boost its economic contribution.
Chairing a review meeting on the Ministry of IT’s affairs on Tuesday, the prime minister emphasized the need to simplify visa processes and create a business-friendly environment to encourage foreign investment in the IT industry. He expressed satisfaction with ongoing efforts to increase IT exports to $25 billion over the next five years.
To support this goal, the premier instructed authorities to streamline Right of Way regulations to accelerate the expansion of fiber optic infrastructure and improve broadband services across the country. He also highlighted the importance of equipping the youth with globally aligned IT training to enhance overseas employment opportunities.
During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on plans to increase the number of freelancers from 1.4 million to 2 million within two years. They also outlined the DigiSkills program’s target to train over 300,000 individuals by June 2025, with an additional 900,000 trainees expected in the following two years.
The meeting also focused on the need for a comprehensive marketing strategy to promote Pakistan’s IT sector globally. Officials detailed ongoing efforts to expand broadband coverage, improve internet accessibility, and enhance speeds nationwide. Progress on the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy was also discussed, with its approval expected next month following stakeholder consultations.
