The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has announced plans to set up 3,000 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations across Pakistan in partnership with a renowned Chinese company. Malik Khuda Bakhsh, Convenor of the FPCCI Energy Standing Committee, revealed that the initiative is part of an agreement signed between the FPCCI, the Government of Pakistan, and the Chinese firm, bringing an estimated $350 million in foreign investment to the country.
The EV charging stations will be installed along the motorway network from Peshawar to Karachi, with an initial investment of $90 million. An additional $250 million will be invested in manufacturing by February 2025, according to Malik Khuda Bakhsh. Speaking at a ceremony at the FPCCI head office in Karachi, he highlighted the progress in Pakistan’s electric transportation sector and introduced the FV Flash Charging Station. He also announced that an inauguration ceremony for the EV charging stations will be held soon.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Malik Khuda Bakhsh emphasized that the establishment of EV charging stations will significantly reduce Pakistan’s reliance on fuel imports, helping to conserve foreign exchange reserves. Additionally, the initiative is expected to contribute to reducing environmental pollution, aligning with global efforts to transition to cleaner energy solutions.
Chinese Investment in Pakistan’s Energy Sector
The FPCCI official noted growing interest from Chinese investors in Pakistan’s energy sector. He stated that Chinese companies are actively engaging with the Government of Pakistan, the Sindh government, and the private sector to explore investment opportunities and facilitate technology transfer. He highlighted the Thar Coalfield and alternative energy sectors as particularly attractive areas for both domestic and foreign investors.
The Sindh government has assured full cooperation to investors, including assistance with documentation and the provision of necessary facilities such as land. Malik Khuda Bakhsh expressed optimism about the potential for further collaboration, noting that the energy sector offers significant opportunities for growth and development.
