The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced the full restoration of the country’s internet services following months of sluggish connectivity. The resolution comes after successful repairs to the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 (SMW4) and Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) submarine cables.
According to a PTA spokesperson, the restoration of these critical cables has eliminated a 1750 Gbps shortfall, allowing internet services to operate at full speed and capacity. The disruptions, which began with faults in the SMW4 and AAE-1 cables in June and August, respectively, had significantly impacted internet performance across the country.
Looking ahead, Pakistan plans to enhance its connectivity infrastructure by integrating the Pakistan East Africa Cable Express (PEACE) cable system in 2023, which will further increase the nation’s internet capacity. Additionally, three new cables—two from Transworld International and one from PTCL—are set to be added over the next two years to bolster connectivity.
