In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced a suspension of flights over Iranian airspace until further notice. This decision follows a series of missile attacks launched by Iran against Israel, raising concerns about a broader conflict in the region.

A PIA spokesperson confirmed the airline’s decision on Wednesday, stating that it would not operate flights over Iran until the situation stabilizes. This announcement came shortly after reports emerged of Iran firing over 180 ballistic missiles at Israel, prompting the United States to affirm its support for Israel and warn Iran of significant repercussions for the attack.

“In view of the situation arising in the region, PIA management has decided to avoid Iran airspace until conditions return to normalcy,” the airline stated on its official X account. Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) have also been issued by other neighboring countries, temporarily restricting their airspaces to ensure flight safety.

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene to address the ongoing tensions, while the European Union has called for an immediate ceasefire in the region.

PIA typically uses two corridors of Iranian airspace: the northern corridor for flights to Canada and Turkey, and the southern corridor for destinations such as the UAE, Bahrain, Doha, and Saudi Arabia.

The recent military actions represent Iran’s most significant offensive against Israel to date, triggering sirens across Israel and prompting the public to seek shelter. Although no injuries were reported in Israel, authorities confirmed one fatality in the occupied West Bank. Iran has stated that its strikes were defensive, targeting Israeli military facilities in response to recent escalations.
