Lahore has topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities for the second consecutive day, as the air quality index (AQI) soared to a hazardous level of 503 amid an intensifying smog crisis. The latest data from IQAir indicates that the air quality in Lahore has worsened compared to the previous day, posing significant health risks to residents as winter approaches.

According to IQAir’s classification, an AQI above 300 is considered “hazardous” to health. The index measures air quality based on the concentration of PM2.5 particles, which are known to damage lung health. Lahore’s PM2.5 levels are currently 55.6 times higher than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) air quality guideline value.

New Delhi, India, remains the second most polluted city, with an AQI of 366, while Karachi ranks third with an AQI of 166, indicating “unhealthy” air quality.

Medical experts have advised individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma and dust allergies, to exercise extreme caution. In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Punjab Environmental Protection Department has issued guidelines for schools and other sectors. School timings have been adjusted to start at 8:45 am from October 28 to January 31, 2025, and assemblies are to be held indoors.

Citizens are advised to avoid outdoor exercise, keep doors and windows closed, wear masks, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition. Additionally, activities like fireworks have been banned until January 31, 2025.

Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated last week that provincial authorities are taking urgent measures to address the smog crisis, including the potential use of artificial rain to mitigate pollution levels.

The worsening air quality is a significant health threat, with residents in polluted cities like Lahore and New Delhi at risk of developing respiratory problems. A report published last year highlighted that rising air pollution could reduce life expectancy by more than five years per person in South Asia, one of the world’s most polluted regions.
