WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will automatically translate messages across 21 languages, making conversations between users speaking different languages more seamless.
The feature, identified in a recent iOS beta version, is designed to remove the need for manual translation. Currently, users must tap on individual messages and select a translate option. The upcoming update will automate this process, displaying translated text as soon as messages are received.
Users will be able to enable or disable automatic translation from the chat settings and choose their preferred source and target languages. Even with translations enabled, the original message will remain visible and accessible.
To ensure privacy, translations will be processed directly on the device using system-level tools, meaning messages will not be sent to external servers. This approach preserves WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. Users will need to download specific language packs, allowing translations to work instantly and even without an internet connection.
The feature will function in both private and group chats. However, in group conversations, automatic translation will only work when all participants are communicating in the same selected language. Mixed-language messages may not be translated.
Language availability may vary depending on the iOS version installed, as older systems may not support all translation packs. Support is expected to expand as more language packs are introduced in future updates.
The feature is still under development and will first be released to beta testers before a broader rollout.
