The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has imposed penalties totaling Rs 265 million on Newage Cables (Pvt.) Ltd. (Rs 75 million) and GM Cables & Pipes (Pvt.) Ltd. (Rs 190.22 million) for engaging in Resale Price Maintenance (RPM), violating Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2010.
The Commission’s investigation revealed that both companies restricted dealers from offering discounts beyond set limits and threatened punitive actions, including termination, for non-compliance. Enquiry findings confirmed that these practices eliminated intra-brand price competition, limiting consumer choice.
While Newage Cables cooperated during the proceedings, GM Cables continued the infringing conduct and challenged documented evidence. CCP has directed both firms to immediately end minimum resale price restrictions, withdraw all related instructions to dealers, and submit compliance reports. Non-payment of fines within 60 days will incur an additional Rs 500,000 per day.
The move reinforces CCP’s commitment to ensuring fair competition and protecting consumers from anti-competitive practices.
