US President Donald Trump claimed Monday that American diplomatic intervention played a crucial role in averting a potential nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India.
“We stopped a nuclear conflict. I think it could have been a bad nuclear war; millions of people could have been killed. So, I’m very proud of that,” Trump told reporters during a White House press briefing.
The President emphasized that the United States remains ready to assist both nations in maintaining peace, crediting his administration with helping to facilitate the recent ceasefire. He also highlighted economic factors as a significant motivation behind the de-escalation.
“Trade is a big reason why they stopped fighting,” Trump remarked during a White House event.
On Saturday, Trump announced a ceasefire between Pakistan and India following days of intense military exchanges and escalating hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbors. In a subsequent statement, the President expressed willingness to help both countries find a resolution to the long-standing Kashmir dispute.
The comments come as tensions have eased between Pakistan and India after what had been described as the most serious military confrontation between the two nations in decades.
