U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed concern over the escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan, describing the situation as “a shame” and voicing hope for a swift resolution.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, President Trump said, “It’s a shame. We just heard about it as we were walking through the doors of the Oval. Just heard about it.” He acknowledged the long-standing disputes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, noting, “They’ve been fighting for a long time. They’ve been fighting for many, many decades. And centuries if you think about it.” Trump concluded his remarks with a call for peace: “I hope it ends very quickly.”
The latest escalation follows India’s launch of “Operation Sindoor,” a series of airstrikes targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. According to India’s Defense Ministry, the strikes were aimed at “terrorist infrastructure” allegedly responsible for attacks against India, including the deadly April 22 assault in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 26 people. India has linked the attack to Pakistan, a claim Islamabad firmly denies.
In response, Pakistan condemned the strikes as a “heinous provocation,” stating that the attacks were carried out from within Indian airspace and vowing to retaliate at a time of its choosing. Pakistani officials reported three fatalities, including a child, and 12 injuries as a result of the strikes.
