A Czech tourist tragically lost her life after falling into a ravine at the Nanga Parbat base camp in Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday, officials confirmed. The victim, identified as Kolouchava Klara, was part of a climbing team attempting to scale Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest mountain, infamous as the “Killer Mountain” due to its deadly history.

Muhammad Qasim, coordinator to the Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister, told Dawn.com that the incident occurred around 4am. Initial reports suggested Klara’s death was caused by an oxygen cylinder explosion, but Diamer Additional Deputy Commissioner Nizamuddin later clarified that she had fallen from a height between Camp One and Camp Two. Authorities are now working to trace the exact location of her fall, with a recovery operation set to begin soon.

“The team accompanying the climber had come to the base camp and informed about her death,” an official said, adding that the initial confusion over the cause of death was resolved after further investigation. Klara had been staying in Chilas with her team since June 15 and departed for the base camp on June 16, reaching Bonner Base Camp the following day.

The Gilgit-Baltistan government has launched an investigation into the incident and is providing all possible assistance to the victim’s team. A helicopter rescue operation is planned for tomorrow to search for Klara.

This incident comes just weeks after two climbers died on Mount Everest during the spring climbing season, and less than a year after Pakistani climber Murad Sadpara succumbed to his injuries following a rescue operation on Broad Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan. Nanga Parbat’s reputation as the “Killer Mountain” remains grim, with this latest tragedy underscoring the extreme risks faced by mountaineers in the region.
