Pakistan is witnessing an unprecedented surge in sugar prices, with rates soaring past Rs. 200 per kilogram in several major cities for the first time in history. According to the latest figures released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the national average price of sugar has climbed to Rs. 188.44 per kg.
The PBS data reveals that sugar prices have jumped by Rs. 3.52 per kg in just one week, up from last week’s average of Rs. 184.92 per kg. The situation is particularly dire in metropolitan areas such as Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, where sugar is now retailing at Rs. 200 per kg.
A closer look at the statistics shows that this price hike is not just a weekly phenomenon. Over the past year, the average price of sugar has surged by Rs. 42.56 per kg, rising from Rs. 145.88 per kg to the current average.
