A tragic incident occurred in Rahim Yar Khan on Monday when the roof of a shop collapsed at a payment centre where women had gathered to receive payments under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
According to initial reports, six women lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries in the collapse.
BISP Chairperson Rubina Khalid expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Acting on the directions of Asif Ali Zardari, she departed for Rahim Yar Khan to visit the site, review the situation, and meet the affected families.
A high-level inquiry committee from BISP headquarters has also been dispatched to investigate the incident and determine responsibility. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 24 hours.
Authorities have issued a notice to the partner bank operating the payment centre, and a financial penalty is being imposed amid concerns of possible negligence.
BISP also announced financial assistance of Rs1 million for the families of the deceased women and Rs300,000 for each injured person, with payments expected to be completed by Tuesday.
The chairperson said the investigation will be conducted transparently and strict legal action will be taken if any negligence is established, while assuring full support for the affected families.
