The Punjab government is considering a series of emergency measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and managing the ongoing energy shortage, including plans to introduce a controlled fuel distribution system.
According to official sources, the Punjab Energy Department has submitted a set of recommendations to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, proposing a shift toward a coupon-based or digital mechanism for the sale of petrol and diesel. The proposed system would also limit fuel access for certain vehicles on designated days to curb overall consumption.
In the education sector, authorities have suggested extending school and college holidays until April 15. A hybrid learning model is also under consideration as part of efforts to reduce energy usage across institutions.
The recommendations further include directives to promote remote working in the private sector, impose a ban on non-essential public events, and expand public transport services such as metro and bus networks to reduce dependence on private vehicles.
Additional measures under review aim to cut energy usage in urban areas. These include shutting down decorative and LED billboards, reducing street lighting intensity after 10 PM, and further limiting market operating hours.
The proposals remain under consideration, and a final decision is expected after consultations at the provincial level.
