In a recent address at a TikTok Safety Seminar, Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Major General (R) Hafeez-ur-Rehman, defended the government’s ongoing crackdown and policy on virtual private networks (VPNs), citing the need to ensure digital safety.

The chairman emphasized the importance of maintaining a secure digital environment, particularly for children, and upheld a firm stance against VPNs. He referenced Article 19 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression within defined social and cultural boundaries, and noted that absolute digital freedom does not exist anywhere in the world.

He clarified that the country began registering VPNs in December 2010, allowing a 15-year period for registration. The recent government initiative to expedite registrations and regulate VPNs has faced significant skepticism. “The impression of blocking VPNs in the country isn’t correct,” he stated, aiming to correct misconceptions about internet shutdowns.

Minister of State for IT, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, also spoke at the seminar, addressing the growing cybersecurity challenges. She linked self-harm to social media content and urged all stakeholders to share the responsibility of protecting young users.

With over four million Pakistani youths active online, both the IT Minister and PTA Chairman highlighted the need for increased awareness about responsible social media use, content creation, and digital safety. TikTok was commended for its adherence to PTA guidelines, serving as a model for other platforms.
