The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has teamed up with Meta to roll out a new security feature aimed at protecting WhatsApp users from hacking and fraud. The system introduces a dual One-Time Password (OTP) mechanism to prevent unauthorized access to accounts.
Under this new setup, if the first OTP is compromised or accidentally shared with hackers, a second code is automatically generated. Users who realize their initial OTP has been exposed can enter the secondary code to instantly regain control of their accounts. The feature, called “Meta OTP,” produces the second password three minutes after the first.
Officials said that technical discussions between PTA and Meta are complete, with final approvals expected soon. The security feature will debut in Pakistan before being extended to other regions. Meta agreed to implement the system in response to the rising number of account takeovers reported across the country.
Authorities have highlighted a sharp increase in WhatsApp hacking cases, often carried out through social engineering. Scammers impersonate delivery staff or service representatives to trick users into sharing OTPs.
Once they gain access, fraudsters frequently contact victims’ saved numbers to demand money or carry out identity-based financial scams. The new dual OTP system is intended to curb these growing threats and give users a stronger layer of protection.
