The cost of 14 essential medicines and injections has surged dramatically, with some prices increasing by as much as 250%, according to a recent report. This steep rise is placing a significant financial burden on patients and their families, sparking concerns about access to affordable healthcare.
The most notable price hike was for the Evinol injection, which now costs Rs. 1,500 per box, a sharp increase from its previous price of Rs. 432. Other essential medicines have also seen substantial price jumps. Irbesartan tablets, used to treat high blood pressure, now cost Rs. 686, up from Rs. 549, while Tenofovir tablets, used for treating viral infections, have risen from Rs. 260 to Rs. 313.
Brexin tablets, commonly used for pain relief, have increased to Rs. 650 from Rs. 600, and Ponstan tablets, another widely used painkiller, now cost Rs. 931, up from Rs. 736. Pulmonol syrup, previously priced at Rs. 19, has seen a staggering increase to Rs. 165, while Ansaid tablets have risen from Rs. 276 to Rs. 325.
Other medicines have also experienced sharp price hikes. Gravinate injection, used for nausea and vomiting, now costs Rs. 626, up from Rs. 253, while Clarithromycin syrup, an antibiotic, has jumped to Rs. 650 from Rs. 281. Popular supplements and injections like Surbex Z and Sunny D have also become significantly more expensive.
The rising costs of these essential medicines are creating serious challenges for families across the country, particularly for those in vulnerable communities.
