Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has authorized the right-sizing committee to proceed with the dissolution of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority, as informed to the Senate Standing Committee on Planning on Wednesday.
During a briefing, the Secretary of the Planning Commission revealed that the ministry had recommended the abolition of the CPEC Authority to the Prime Minister’s Office. Following this recommendation, the Prime Minister empowered the right-sizing committee to manage the termination process.
The Senate committee expressed concerns about the deceleration of CPEC projects, attributing it to ineffective government policies. A representative from the National Highway Authority (NHA) noted that Chinese officials are particularly worried about the political instability in Pakistan, which is adversely affecting the progress of CPEC initiatives.
Additionally, the committee was informed that the construction of the Hyderabad to Sukkur M6 Motorway will be incorporated into the CPEC framework, with an estimated total cost of Rs. 400 billion. Pakistan is expected to finance 40 percent of the project, with final approval anticipated at the upcoming Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting.
