Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed authorities to further reduce power tariffs and accelerate the implementation of future power generation projects. Chairing a high-level meeting to review the country’s electricity and power plans, the prime minister emphasized prioritizing low-cost energy projects utilizing local resources.
During the meeting, the premier was briefed on the progress of ongoing hydropower projects across the country. Highlighting the importance of affordable and environmentally friendly energy, he stressed the need to transition the current electricity generation capacity to solar energy. “Globally, electricity is being produced from environmentally friendly, low-cost solar energy,” he noted, adding that Pakistan has immense potential for solar energy development.
The prime minister also reviewed the phasing out of inefficient power plants that consume excessive fuel but produce minimal electricity. He ordered the immediate closure of such outdated plants, stating that this move would save valuable foreign exchange and reduce electricity costs for consumers.
PM Shehbaz further instructed authorities to take swift action against officials deliberately obstructing reforms in the power sector. He called for expedited reforms in the electricity transmission system, directing that it be upgraded to meet international standards. He also emphasized the need for a modern, technology-driven system for the selection and transmission of low-cost electricity.
The premier urged the completion of all power sector reforms within the specified timeline, ensuring that the measures would lead to a more efficient and cost-effective energy system.
The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Dr. Musadik Malik, Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik, and other senior officials.
