Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia within the next two days after receiving an invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.During his visit to Riyadh, the prime minister is likely to hold high-level discussions covering evolving regional tensions and global political developments, underscoring the continued strategic coordination between Pakistan and the Kingdom.

The prime minister will be accompanied by Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb is also expected to join the delegation once he concludes his ongoing visit to the United States.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb is also expected to join the delegation once he concludes his ongoing visit to the United States.

The visit comes shortly after landmark diplomatic engagements held in Islamabad, where senior US and Iranian officials met for direct negotiations for the first time in more than a decade — the highest-level contact between the two sides since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. The talks followed the start of a ceasefire aimed at ending six weeks of intense conflict across the Gulf region that disrupted energy supplies, caused heavy casualties, and raised fears of a broader regional war.

Despite nearly 21 hours of negotiations, no final agreement was reached. Soon afterward, the US military announced plans to impose a naval blockade on maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports, placing the fragile ceasefire under renewed strain.

Economic cooperation is also expected to be a central topic during the Saudi visit, particularly after Saudi Arabia and Qatar jointly pledged $5 billion in financial assistance for Pakistan to support economic stability.

Although the ceasefire remains in effect and Iran has halted attacks on US-linked facilities in Gulf states, Pakistan has already deployed fighter aircraft and additional military assets to Saudi Arabia under an existing defence cooperation framework.

In September 2025, Islamabad and Riyadh signed a mutual defence agreement under which both countries committed to treating any aggression against one as an attack on both, marking a significant expansion of their long-standing security partnership.
