Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to use all available channels to disseminate real-time information to the public regarding the evolving flood situation across the country. The directive comes in light of recent heavy rainfall and the growing risk of flooding in areas surrounding the Indus River and other rivers.
The Prime Minister instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), provincial administrations, and rescue agencies to remain on high alert and implement immediate safety and preparedness measures in vulnerable areas. He specifically emphasized the need for proactive action in districts located downstream of the Tarbela Dam, where an expected increase in river flow due to spillway operations could trigger flash floods.
To strengthen the nationwide response, the Prime Minister called on the NDMA to enhance coordination with the Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs). He also instructed the NDMA to forge stronger operational linkages with provincial governments and other relevant institutions to ensure swift and effective action during emergencies.
Furthermore, Shehbaz Sharif directed all provincial administrations to launch effective public awareness campaigns, ensuring timely warnings and safety guidelines for communities at risk. The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has been tasked with identifying and communicating high-, medium-, and low-risk flood zones through the media, so that people in those areas can take necessary precautions in advance.
Reiterating the importance of preparedness, the Prime Minister ordered provincial governments to ensure their readiness to tackle any flood-related emergency. He directed the NDMA to supervise and confirm that provincial authorities have completed all necessary preparations ahead of time.
