The National Assembly Standing Committee on Privatization was informed that the bidding process for the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to commence on October 1. During a meeting held on Tuesday, the committee’s chairman, lawmaker Farooq Sattar disclosed this significant development.
According to Sattar, six companies are poised to participate in the bidding process for the national flag carrier, marking a pivotal step as PIA becomes the first state-owned enterprise to be privatized under the current governmental framework. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance efficiency and financial stability within the airline industry.
The committee chairman emphasized that safeguarding the rights of PIA employees remains a top priority throughout the privatization process. This assurance addresses concerns regarding job security and employee welfare amidst the transition.
Officials from the Privatization Commission also informed the committee that PIA’s name will remain unchanged following the privatization, maintaining its identity as a symbol of national pride.
The upcoming bidding process represents a critical juncture for PIA, as the government seeks to revitalize the airline through private sector involvement while ensuring that the interests of its workforce are protected.
