The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for several districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following a warning from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) regarding a significant wet spell expected from June 26 to July 1, 2025.

In a notice dated June 25, 2025, addressed to the Deputy Commissioners of Chitral Upper, Chitral Lower, Dir Upper, Swat, and Kohistan Upper, the PDMA highlighted the risk of widespread rain and thunderstorms, which could lead to flash floods in vulnerable glaciated regions.

The authority urged local communities in at-risk areas to take necessary precautions to prevent loss of life, livestock, and damage to infrastructure and crops. Key safety measures recommended include:

  • Ensuring that the local community is forewarned of potential risks.
  • Making emergency and rescue services readily available.
  • Pre-positioning emergency equipment for rapid response.
  • Advising tourists and travelers in at-risk areas to avoid unnecessary travel.
  • Coordinating with relevant departments for timely restoration of roads in case of blockages or damage.

The PDMA has committed to providing routine updates and can be reached via helpline 1700 for any emergencies.
