The national treasury has suffered significant losses due to prolonged grounding of aircraft by Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIA), amounting to over Rs. 60 billion over two years.

The Auditor General of Pakistan released a report highlighting these financial discrepancies.

In 2022, PIA’s aircraft maintenance delays resulted in losses exceeding Rs. 21.81 billion. The previous year, 2021, saw losses estimated at over Rs. 38 billion due to similar issues. The Auditor General reviewed this matter in September 2023, and it was discussed in the departmental accounts committee in January 2024.

PIA management attributed the maintenance delays to a lack of financial resources. In response, the Auditor General has requested a detailed report on the financial constraints faced by the airline.
