Since the trade ban imposed in August 2019, Pakistan has restricted its imports from India to only life-saving medicines, according to official documents seen by Raised by Numbers.

This limited trade activity highlights the ongoing impact of the suspension of bilateral trade between the two countries.

In the financial year 2023-24, Pakistan imported goods worth $278 million from India, while its exports to India remained at zero for the fourth consecutive year. This marks a significant decrease from FY22, when imports totaled $352 million, dropping sharply to $27.6 million in FY23.

Prior to the suspension of trade in August 2019, Pakistan had maintained an average annual export of $300 million to India from FY13 to FY19, with imports averaging $1.5 billion. The trade suspension was a response to India’s revocation of Article 370, which had granted special status to occupied Kashmir.

In addition to halting trade, Pakistan also suspended the appointment of a Trade and Investment Officer (TIO) at its Trade Mission in India, further underscoring the strained economic relations between the two nations.
