In a significant development for Pakistan-Bangladesh trade relations, a Pakistani cargo ship has arrived at Chittagong Port in Bangladesh after a long hiatus. This milestone marks a promising step towards strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, became a sovereign country in 1971, with Pakistan officially recognizing it in 1974. While relations have generally been positive, the era of Hasina Wazid saw pro-India policies that marginalized Pakistan in Bangladesh’s mainstream discourse, creating a significant communication gap. However, with the interim government now in power, supported by the Students’ revolution, relations between the two brotherly countries are being normalized.

The 2300 TEU cargo vessel, originating from Karachi, arrived at Chittagong Port recently. The Pakistan High Commission in Bangladesh praised this development, highlighting that the new sea trade corridor will enhance supply chain efficiency, save time, and create new business opportunities for both countries.

Javed Balwani, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), expressed optimism about the restoration of sea trade, particularly benefiting the textile and garment sectors. “This is a golden opportunity for Pakistani exporters to introduce their products in the Bangladeshi market. Increased exports will positively impact our foreign exchange reserves,” Balwani stated.

Previously, trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh relied on indirect routes via Sri Lanka or Dubai, and air connectivity between the two nations had been suspended since 2018. Economists predict that reopening this sea corridor could significantly boost trade volumes in the coming years, marking a turning point in bilateral economic relations.
