Pakistan has successfully developed 36 cannabis-based products, marking a significant milestone in the country’s scientific research efforts. This development was highlighted during a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Science and Technology on Wednesday, focusing on the latest advancements by the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR).

Dr. Hussain Abidi, Chairman of PCSIR, reported the creation of 36 products derived from cannabis. However, he expressed concerns about the challenges that lie ahead in marketing these products. In addition to cannabis-based innovations, PCSIR’s labs have facilitated the production of election ink and contributed to Rs. 2.5 billion in exports over the past three years.

The committee meeting also emphasized the need for increased research in the pharmaceutical industry, with PCSIR expected to play a growing role. The committee chairman stressed the importance of completing projects on schedule and accelerating research to address the rising cost of medicines.

Dr. Abidi also informed the committee about the solarization of PCSIR facilities, which has resulted in savings of Rs. 120 million. Furthermore, he noted the import of four 3D printers to Pakistan, with three already operational in Peshawar. These printers are set to be used for research across various sectors, including construction.

The committee reviewed the performance of the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority, established last year under the Cabinet Division. Members of the committee called for timely funding of PCSIR projects to enhance exports and introduce new technologies in Pakistan.
